Vintage Chairs Makeover with Chalk Paint

Screen Shot 2013-05-19 at 2.43.40 PMI finally took the plunge and remade my Grandmother’s dining room chairs. I inherited her dining table and 4 chairs years ago from the Grandmother I never met. She passed away when my Mother was young and I never felt right painting her dining set. But they were damaged and faded and they just sat in my garage, which is such a shame since they are such cute chairs. Well, with the discovery of Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint gave me the confidence to paint them and give them new life!

I originally came up with the color above by mixing 1/2 a Litre Pot of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence with a sample bottle of the Pure White.  When using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint the woodwork NEEDS NO PRIMING, NO PREPARATION as it will stick to almost everything -old waxed pine, melamine and varnished wood included – so this was right up my alley. We are not fans of Prep work here in the Itsy Belle household (just ask Mr. Itsy Belle!) PLUS the paint a is a simple eco friendly water based paint… you just wash your brushes out in water. Yay for the environment!

WELL…. Then I decided I wanted to paint ALL the chairs and showcase them in my daughter’s upcoming  birthday party which has a soft pastel aqua in the color palette..SO, without wanting to fork out another $40 for chalk paint, we decided to experiment a bit. So we poured 1/2 a Litre Pot of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint with an equal amount of  Behr Premium Ultra Pure White Flat paint to create this softer color. I was concerned about mixing chalk paint with Latex paint but it turned out great! I love the look! And now you know – you can cut your chalk paint with latex and save yourself a ton of cash! (Don’t all thank me at once).

The seats are temporarily recovered in cream fabric with a lace fabric overlay just for the photo-shoot this weekend.. add a vintage photo filter and they’re perfect! Afterward we will be putting pack the black lace damask print shown above on the darker painted chairs. I think it will be so cute in our kitchen! And I am so glad I can bring my Grandmother’s chairs out of the darkness of the garage. I never got to meet my Grandma so it feels good to have something beautiful of hers in our home. My mom says she was an artist and that is where I got all my artistic genes – so I don’t think Grandma would mind me bringing her chairs back to life with a little creative makeover.

Now I just need to decide if I like the Made over vintage chairs or our original classic black cross back chairs in this room. Help me decide! ~ Let me know what you think in a comment below!

Thanks Shannon! We got the table on clearance “AS-IS’ for $60 at Ikea! Perfect for our kitchen nook! I love the color chairs but I love the classic cross back black too so I think I will keep both and switch them out now and then, lol!
